CAF hands Daniel Laryea key role as Ghanaian referee earns AFCON 2025 appointment

Prominent Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea has been selected to officiate at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after serving various roles, including a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) official at previous tournaments.

The experienced centre-man is the only Ghanaian official named in the 73-man list for the continental showpiece next month in Morocco.

Laryea remains Ghana’s refereeing beacon, and he is expected to handle some of the biggest games at the competition in North Africa.

The Accra Academy graduate has a huge reputation on the continent, having handled matches in the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup and also Ghana’s biggest game involving Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Other officials named for the tournament across the continent are: Ghorbal Mustapha, Gamou Youcef (Algeria), Djindo Louis Houngnandande (Benin), Mdabihawenimana Pacifique (Burundi), Nfere Aboub Abdoul (Cameroon), Alhadji Allalou Mahamat (Chad), Messie Jessie Oved Moutouo (Congo), Kpan Clement Franklin (Ivory Coast), Ndala Ngambo Jean-Jacques (DR Congo), Mohamed Mansour Maarouf, Amin Mohamed Omar (Egypt), Atcho Pierre Ghislain (Gabon) and Mebiame Patrice Tanguy (Gabon).

Others include: Kamaku Peter Waweru (Kenya), Traore Boubou (Mali), Abdel Aziz Bouh (Mauritania), Dahane Beida (Mauritania), Herallal Ahmed Imtehaz (Mauritius), Jalal Jayed, Kach Grafe Mustapha (Morocco), Uwikunda Samuel (Rwanda), Issa Sy (Senegal), Omar Abdulkadir Artan (Somalia), Abongile Tom (South Africa), Mahmood Ali Mahmood Ismail (Sudan), Mehrez Melki (Tunisia), and Shamira Nabadda (Uganda).

The rest of the officials will serve as Video Assistant Referees at the tournament, which starts on December 21 and ends on January 18.
