The Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit (MMT), Hon. Kale Cezar, has announced progress on the company’s plan to introduce 24 hour bus services across Ghana. Speaking on the Ebaanosen Show on Plan B 104.5 FM, he said the move is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda to modernize and elevate the country’s public transportation system.
Cezar explained that the shift to round the clock operations is also driven by a decline in passenger patronage, adding that improving public transportation is crucial to national development. He stressed that private transport services often more expensive cannot alone set the standard needed for a growing country.
He noted that the success of the 24/7 service depends on ensuring an effective and efficient transport network, and confirmed that MMT has already begun implementing key operational measures. The company expects to receive about 100 new buses by mid next year to support the full rollout.
A major focus, he said, is addressing the challenge of launching continuous operations in major cities such as Accra, Sunyani, Takoradi, and Kumasi. Despite these hurdles, MMT is confident that the right systems are being put in place. Cezar also revealed plans to initiate expanded intercity services to help ease congestion, curb fare overpricing, and reduce pressure in commercial centers.
He added that MMT aims to extend its reach to remote and underserved communities, ensuring that residents in such areas have reliable transportation options. The new operational model, he said, will also create job opportunities for young people, including those without formal education.
On safety, Cezar stated that MMT is working closely with the Ghana Police Service to establish enhanced security measures, which may include deploying officers on buses or along major routes. Long distance buses will also have additional drivers to help prevent fatigue related accidents
