The Ghana National Fire Service is cautioning households to be more vigilant about electrical safety as domestic fire incidents continue to rise. In an interview on Plan B 104.5 FM, fire officers outlined the common but often overlooked habits that spark electrical fires in homes.
They identified overloading power sockets, leaving irons plugged in after use, and running or hiding electrical cables under carpets as some of the leading causes. The officers stressed that although they cannot list every possible cause, many appliances give early warning signs such as unusual smells or strange sounds that should immediately alert homeowners to danger.
Listeners were advised to assign each appliance its own socket to prevent overheating and electrical faults. The officers also issued a strong warning against “arcing,” a dangerous practice that involves attempting to repair or reconnect electrical wires without the required training. They explained that such do it yourself fixes can easily generate sparks and trigger fires.
The Fire Service urged the public to call qualified electricians whenever they notice signs of electrical problems instead of trying to fix the issues themselves.
