Japan outclass Ghana 2-0 in Kirin Challenge Cup showdown

Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Japan in their Kirin Challenge Cup friendly at Toyota Stadium on Friday, November 14, 2025.

The Black Stars, missing several key players including Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, and Thomas Partey, faced a confident Japanese side fresh from a historic 3-2 win over Brazil.

Japan controlled possession early but initially found it difficult to break through Ghana’s compact five-man defence. The deadlock was broken in the 16th minute when Watanabe Tsuyoshi advanced on a cross, with Sano Kaishu intercepting and linking up with Doan, Watanabe, and Kubo Takefusa. Minamino, left unmarked, calmly finished to give Japan the lead.

The second half saw Japan continue to press, testing Ghana’s goalkeeper Joseph Anang, before Doan added a second in the 60th minute. Receiving a pass from Kubo on the right side of the box, he fired a precise shot into the near post to extend the lead.

Ghana’s evening was further marred when midfielder Francis Abu suffered a serious injury and had to be stretchered off. Japan made several late substitutions, including three debutants, while the Black Stars struggled to respond.

The scoreline remained 2-0 as Ghana now turn their attention to a friendly against South Korea on Tuesday. These matches form part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
