Tema, Ghana — Tensions are mounting within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tema East following the abrupt cancellation of a scheduled meeting between flagbearer hopeful Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and party delegates.
Meeting Called Off Abruptly
The gathering, which was set to take place on Tuesday evening at Tema Newtown, was reportedly cancelled by the Constituency Chairman, Mr. Ofori Teye. According to him, the meeting lacked an official authorization letter, prompting his decision to call it off.
However, members of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team believe the move was politically motivated and intended to frustrate their candidate’s engagement with delegates.
Campaign Team Reacts
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen political programme, campaign team member Matthew Kitcher expressed disappointment and warned the chairman against what he described as “acts of bias and sabotage.”
“We are sending a clear message to Chairman Ofori Teye — be careful. This kind of conduct will not be tolerated. We will resist any attempt to sabotage our peaceful activities,” Kitcher stated firmly.
He further revealed that the team chose restraint during the confusion at the venue to maintain party unity, despite provocation.
“Our team came in peace. We didn’t want to create tension, but we won’t allow anyone to undermine our efforts,” he added.
Growing Discontent
The incident has drawn mixed reactions from NPP supporters in the constituency. Some have called for internal investigations into what they describe as a “pattern of unfair treatment” toward certain aspirants.
With the NPP’s flagbearer contest heating up, the Tema East standoff underscores deepening cracks at the grassroots level — a development that could test the party’s internal cohesion ahead of its national primaries.
Call for Calm
Analysts say the party must prioritize unity and fairness to avoid divisions that could affect its electoral fortunes in 2024.
For now, Kennedy Agyapong’s team insists it remains committed to running a peaceful campaign — but warns it will not stay silent in the face of continued obstruction.
