Baba Tunde Calls For State Of Emergency To Fight Illegal Mining

The Chinese contracted to construct the stadia for CAN 2008 started polluting our waters with galamsey – Association

Baba Tunde, an Assembly Member and social commentator, has expressed deep concern over the growing menace of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, describing it as a national disaster that is doing more harm than good.

Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem on Plan B FM, Baba Tunde identified several root causes of galamsey, including unemployment in mining areas, weak enforcement of laws, and the lack of seriousness among some security personnel and enforcement agencies responsible for protecting the country’s lands and water bodies.

He noted that the rising crime rate in mining communities is also linked to illegal mining activities and emphasized that the fight against galamsey should not be left to government alone. “This is a national interest issue, and everyone must deliberately take part in combating it,” he stated.

According to him, apart from destroying farmlands and water bodies, illegal mining also creates severe noise pollution, affecting nearby residents. He therefore threw his full support behind calls for the declaration of a state of emergency to deal decisively with the menace. “Let’s all work hand in hand to stop illegal mining before it destroys our future,” he urged.
