Health Minister Announces Payment For Over 6,000 Nurses Starting November After Months Of Delays

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has indicated that the Ministry of Finance has received cabinet approval to pay the salaries of approximately 6,500 nurses who have not been paid since their posting ten months ago.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, October 13, 2025, the minister revealed that the affected nurses, who recently staged a protest to demand their salaries, will receive payment starting in November, 2025.

“As I speak to you now, cabinet has approved that, with immediate effect starting from November, the Minister of Finance must pay approximately 6,500 nurses. This will bring the total number of nurses being paid to 13,500, including the 7,000 already receiving salaries. I have the letter to that effect in my hand,” he stated.

According to the minister, the affected nurses were part of a group of 13,500 for whom employment clearance was issued by the previous government.

However, while the nurses assumed their posts, their financial clearance, issued by the Ministry of Finance at the time, was set to take effect from September 2024 and expired on December 31, 2024.

Despite being recruited and posted by December 31, 2024, the minister emphasised that the nurses were not processed for payment.

This left the new government, which took office in January 2025, with two options: either allow the nurses to remain at their posts and find means to pay their salaries or send them home.

After considering its options, the government decided to retain the nurses and subsequently processed payments for 7,239 of them, leaving approximately 6,500 whose salaries are now expected to be settled by November.
