GPRTU Calls For Government Support To Replace Aging Vehicles

Driver Unions Suspend Intended Strike

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has cautiously welcomed the Transport Ministry’s plan to phase out rickety vehicles, but warns that financial support is crucial to its success.

Samuel Addo, GPRTU’s Deputy Public Resource Officer, emphasized that many drivers rely on aging vehicles due to financial constraints. “The government must provide subsidies, grants, or low-interest loans to help transport operators upgrade their fleets,” he stressed.

Addo acknowledged that some vehicles pose safety risks, but noted that not all rickety vehicles are beyond repair. He highlighted GPRTU’s efforts to promote road safety, including instructing drivers to take their vehicles to workshops for maintenance.

The GPRTU is urging the government to provide the necessary support to ensure a smooth transition to safer, newer vehicles. Without this support, drivers may be forced to continue using aging vehicles, compromising road safety.
