Dr Kumaku Wisdom, a Psychiatrist at the Tema Urban Hospital, has emphasised that suicide is not a solution to life’s problems.
In an interview with Nana Asabea on Plan B FM’s “Nyansapɔ Fie” show, Dr Wisdom stressed that attempted suicide is a criminal offence and urged individuals not to heed voices that instruct them to harm themselves.
According to Dr Wisdom, conditions such as bipolar disorder and depression can push individuals to consider suicide. He explained that auditory hallucinations, where individuals hear voices instructing them to harm themselves, can be a symptom of various mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.
Dr Wisdom highlighted the importance of seeking professional help when experiencing such symptoms. He also described situations where individuals’ movements and medication are closely monitored as part of a treatment plan or safety protocol.
The psychiatrist appealed to parents and guardians to report mental health concerns to the relevant authorities, emphasising that early intervention is crucial in preventing suicide.
By seeking help and support, individuals can overcome their struggles and find better solutions to their problems.
