Deputy NADMO Coordinator for Kpone Katamanso, Francis Badu Melo, has defended President John Mahama’s firm posture on accountability and the ongoing clampdown on illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem, Mr. Melo argued that accountability was one of the key reasons Ghanaians returned Mahama to office, insisting that the president is simply delivering on his promises.
He accused the previous Akufo-Addo administration of handing vast tracts of land to the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly called Chairman Wontumi, which he claims resulted in widespread environmental devastation.
“Today, because President Mahama is demanding answers on how Wontumi destroyed our lands, the NPP has resorted to street protests—which is unreasonable,” Mr. Melo charged.
He disclosed that some arrests had already been made to support ongoing investigations, mentioning another NPP regional chairman, Obronye, who he said was notorious for publicly insulting national leaders, including clergy and even the Inspector General of Police.
According to Mr. Melo, the opposition’s demonstrations are a calculated attempt to tarnish the government’s image. But he maintained that Ghanaians already appreciate the goodwill and leadership qualities of President Mahama’s administration.
