Stay Ahead Of HPV”: Nurses Recommend Regular Screening And Vaccination

Stay Ahead Of HPV”: Nurses Recommend Regular Screening And Vaccination
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Betty Ackon, a Public Health Nurse at Tema Urban Hospital, advises the public to stay ahead of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) due to increasing cervical cancer cases. In an interview with Odiamono Kwaku Gyimah, she highlights two types of HPV: low-risk and high-risk, which can cause cervical cancer and genital warts. Ackon recommends regular screening and vaccination, encouraging participation in the upcoming free vaccination exercise.

According to Jemima Amoako, Health Promotion Officer, individuals outside the 9-14 age range can receive the vaccine at a cost. “Those interested can visit Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for GH₵1,800 (two doses) or various private hospitals for GH₵1,500 per dose.” The government will provide free vaccination for females aged 9-14 and virgins above 14 to combat cervical cancer.

Jemima Amoako also emphasises prevention measures, stating, “Ending premarital sex and practicing safe sex can help reduce the risk of HPV transmission. Regular screening is crucial for early detection and treatment.”
