‘If NPP Loses Akwatia By-Election, I’ll Resign As MP’ – Michael Okyere Baafi Vows

The New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has made a declaration ahead of the September 2, 2025, Akwatia by-election, vowing to resign from Parliament if his party fails to reclaim the seat.

“If NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP, mark my words!” GhOne TV quoted him as saying in an interview on August 31, 2025.

His statement follows that of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, who delivered an assessment of the governing National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) performance in its first eight months in power.

We will not tolerate violence and intimidation at Akwatia – NDC lawyers

Speaking to the media during the one-week observation of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, NAPO argued that the NDC had failed to deliver on its electoral promises, which propelled it to victory in the 2024 general elections.

“Every single thing that the NDC promised, they have failed. I haven’t seen any government that can fail on all its promises within eight months. The first of its kind is the NDC,” NAPO said.

He claimed that the NDC’s leadership has left Ghanaians disillusioned, likening the decision to vote out the NPP to “selling a colour television for black and white.”

The by-election has become necessary following the passing of Ernest Kumi, who represented the Akwatia constituency in Parliament until his death.

The contest is expected to be fierce between the NDC’s Bernard Bediako and the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

While NAPO stopped short of providing evidence to substantiate his allegations, he urged voters in Akwatia to reaffirm their trust in the NPP and vote overwhelmingly for its candidate, arguing that the ruling party had proven incapable of meeting the expectations of the Ghanaian people.
