The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has stated that any attempts by their political opponents to threaten their members, including former officials, will not deter them from going to Akwatia for the upcoming by-election.
Speaking on Channel One TV on August 20, 2025, Mohammed stated that they remain fully focused and prepared to win the seat for the party and will not be intimidated by attempts to instill fear or cause the arrest of its members.
His comment was in response to a statement by the Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, that fugitives seen at Akwatia would be apprehended by law enforcement agents.
“… No amount of threats can stop any former government appointee from going to Akwatia. Former government appointees have no limitations. Hon Sedina Tamakloe is a former government appointee. She’s a convicted member but these people are not interested in arresting her,” he said.
Mohammed emphasised that they (NPP) will not lose sight of their main objective of securing victory in the Akwatia by-election, despite what he described as diversionary tactics.
He added that the NPP is merely committed to being present at the constituency to ensure peaceful polls.
“… We are not going to be disturbed. Our focus is on the ballot, and we are going to win the elections. We are not going to sit on the fence and allow the NDC to go and play football just as it is. Don’t be carried away by the assurances of the security agencies to misbehave. Don’t be carried away. You cannot have your way as you did in Ablekuma North. Let us all be very careful,” he said.
Mohammed stressed that while the party will not act violently, they will take every necessary measure to protect themselves.

“That is why we in the NPP, will protect ourselves. Nobody in NPP will go there with any weapon but we’ll go with our bare hands. We have the right to protect ourselves. We will not be intimidated by the fear of arrests. If they want, they can come and arrest everybody. The candidate is not a former appointee; he’s a candidate that is going to be on the ballot. If they try anything nasty in Akwatia by saying that they are going to arrest people, they will hear from us,” he added.
