A 40-year-old ex-convict, Nurudeen Abdul Ganew, has been arraigned in court. He faces charges for allegedly defrauding Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII. The chief is the Paramount Chief of the Abeadze Traditional Area and a former Vice President of the National House of Chiefs.
Abdul Ganew appeared before Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah on July 1, 2025. He faces three counts: personation to commit a crime, defrauding by false pretences, and money laundering. His plea was not taken because investigations are still ongoing.
The case has been adjourned to July 7, 2025. On this date, he is expected to respond to the charges.
Details of the Allegations
The prosecution claims that on April 24, 2025, Abdul Ganew called the complainant. He used an MTN number and introduced himself as Dr. Callistus Mahama. He convinced the chief that auctioned government vehicles were available for purchase.
Abdul Ganew claimed he had secured a Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4. He offered it at a discounted price of GH¢50,000 instead of GH¢165,000. Believing he was speaking with Dr. Mahama due to voice similarity, the chief transferred money to two mobile money numbers.
These numbers allegedly belonged to an accomplice named “Alhaji Haruna,” who posed as a Customs official. After successfully defrauding Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, Abdul Ganew targeted other traditional leaders.
The complainant informed two other chiefs about the deal at Abdul Ganew’s request. Osagyefo Amanfo Edu transferred GH¢165,000 while Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI sent GH¢133,000 for additional vehicles. After these transfers, all communication ceased and Abdul Ganew became unreachable.
The complainant then contacted the real Dr. Callistus Mahama and discovered he had been duped. A formal complaint was made to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Arrest and Investigation
Abdul Ganew was traced to his home in Wa in the Upper West Region where he was arrested. A search revealed four mobile phones linked to fraudulent communications.
During interrogation, Abdul Ganew reportedly admitted his involvement in the crime. The court will take his plea on July 7, 2025 as investigations continue.
Prosecution indicates that more suspects may be involved and further charges could follow.
