Foreign Investigative Partners Pursuing Ashanti NPP Chairman Wontumi

Chairman Wontumi receives report on cause of NPP’s ‘abysmal’ performance in 2024 elections

Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently the subject of active investigations by foreign law enforcement partners concerning suspected criminal activities related to his business and personal dealings. This significant development was disclosed by Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai during an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday.

“There are issues with our foreign partners, an investigative agency,” Dr. Srem Sai stated, elaborating that these international agencies are “interested in matters traced—or suspected to be traced—to his business operations and to him personally.”

When questioned by host Evans Mensah about whether Ghana’s foreign allies initiated the probe, the Deputy Attorney General clarified that while it was “not necessarily triggered by our foreign partners,” they are actively “interested in what we are doing and are assisting us, just as we assist them.” He underscored the increasingly cooperative and international nature of modern law enforcement.

Dr. Srem Sai indicated that the foreign agencies’ interest stems from suspicions that “the proceeds of crime or materials subject to criminal proceedings have ended up in his possession.”

Pressed directly by the host on whether Wontumi was implicated in crimes extending beyond Ghana’s borders, Dr. Srem Sai declined to provide specifics. “That is something I cannot disclose at this point,” he responded, reiterating the commitment to fair process: “But the point I’m trying to make is that we will not persecute anyone,” as quoted by myjoyonline.com.

He further emphasized that divulging operational details could compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigations. “You need to understand—if I come here and lay out the design and scheme, I’m essentially alerting the suspects about the direction of the investigation, which could help them evade capture,” Dr. Srem Sai explained.
