Ghana Water Limited (GWL) is not new to bottled water production. The company started this initiative in 2018 under the Akufo-Addo administration.
Mr. Clifford Braimah, former Managing Director of GWL, provided clarification. He said GWL established a subsidiary called G-Water Limited in 2018. This was part of a restructuring to include packaged water production.
The Kpong facility initially produced 3,000 bottles per hour. It later increased production to 6,000 bottles per hour and plans to reach 12,000.
Mr. Braimah criticized current MD Adam Mutawakilu’s comments about entering the bottled water market. He called them “misleading” and suggested Mutawakilu should say he’s expanding an inherited project.
The idea for bottled water came after the 2013 merger of Ghana Water Company Limited and Ghana Urban Water Limited. This merger aimed to create a more efficient utility service.
As of June 2024, GWL operates 84 water systems across Ghana. This includes 61 surface systems and 23 groundwater systems. The company serves about 14 million people through its 103 district offices.
GWL produces approximately 950,995 cubic meters of water daily. This is against a national demand exceeding 1.1 million cubic meters.
