King Etse, NDC Communication Team Member for Kpone Katamanso Constituency, has criticised the government’s policy allowing market vendors to pay tolls without designated spaces.
In an interview on Plan B FM’s Nkɔsoɔnsɛm show hosted by Obidehyeɛ Kofi Sekyi, King Etse stated, “There are no places for market women and men, hence they sell on pavements and still pay tolls.”
He added, “Almost all the market squares are full and overcrowded, yet still the Assembly taxes them even though they don’t have designated places to sell.”
King Etse emphasised that market vendors are forced to sell on pavements due to lack of space, saying, “I don’t think any market vendor will deliberately sell on pavements as it’s risky, but for the lack of market spaces, they are forced to do so.”
Meanwhile, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has stated that it will meet with the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, as part of efforts to enforce road traffic regulations, particularly those concerning street hawking and trading on the roads.
This follows growing concerns raised by commercial transport operators across the country, who have threatened to suspend their services over the increasing menace of unauthorised roadside trading.
