NPP Urges Prez Mahama to Reconsider Tax Reforms

President’s Ethics Code Falls Flat – NPP

James W. Tamakloe, a member of the NPP’s communication team for the Tema West Constituency, has cautioned President John Dramani Mahama that abolishing certain taxes without a viable replacement plan would result in a substantial revenue deficit of approximately GH₵5.2 billion.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkɔsoɔnsɛm programme hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi, Tamakloe suggested that the President could draw lessons from the tax amnesty policy implemented by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, which aimed to broaden the tax net.

Tamakloe noted that the scrapping of taxes such as the E-Levy, which generated nearly GH₵2.1 billion, and betting tax, which yielded GH₵3.1 billion, would necessitate alternative revenue streams to offset the deficit.

In a separate development, controversy surrounds Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, after a viral video showed him handing out an undisclosed amount of foreign currency, reportedly US dollars, to evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Christian Afetor Dela, Communications Officer for the Tema West Constituency’s NDC, praised Gyamfi for accepting his mistake and seeking forgiveness, describing it as maturity.

Dela commended Gyamfi’s willingness to acknowledge his error and apologise, despite criticism from party grassroots over the perceived extravagance.
