Free Tertiary Education: A Policy Many PWDs Can’t Benefit From – Down Syndrome Association of Ghana

Free Tertiary Education: A Policy Many PWDs Can’t Benefit From – Down Syndrome Association of Ghana
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Agnes Teiko Nyemi-Tei, Founder of Todah Connect Foundation and Executive Director of Down Syndrome Association of Ghana, has urged the government to prioritise Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), particularly those with Down syndrome, in all aspects of life as only a few of them could access the free tertiary education policy.

Speaking at Plan B FM’s Mama’s Footprint 2025, Nyemi-Tei noted that many PWDs, such as those with cerebral palsy or wheelchair users who require adult diapers, incur significant expenses and need government support.

She emphasised that only a small percentage of PWDs can access the current free tertiary education policy, highlighting the need for prioritisation.

Nyemi-Tei also called for an end to the misconception that having a child with Down syndrome is a curse, a traditional belief that leads to harmful practices.
