Zebilla Police Receive 4-day-old Baby Abandoned In A Pigsty

The Zebilla District Police Command has received a baby believed to be 4 to 5 days old who was abandoned by an unknown person on Friday 28th March, 2025.

The said baby was found by one Ayine Gifty and Inusah Awudu in a pigsty near Zebilla market square in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

According to Gifty who rescued the baby from the pigsty, she was at her store attending to her customers at Zebilla market square when a customer who had made a purchase earlier returned, suddenly informing her of a baby’s cry coming from behind the store.

Without any hesitation, she rushed to the scene and found a baby girl covered with cloth abandoned and crying.

Gifty called his brother and a few women who were around at that time, and they suggested that the case be reported to the Police. Together with the rescuer, the baby was sent to the Police station.

The brother of the rescuer, Inusah Awudu, said he was surprised one could abandon his own blood and flee away just like that. He said he assisted the sister to the Police station and called the relevant authorities to come to the aid of the poor baby.

The District Director of Social Welfare, Hudson Peter Awudi, in an interview, said he had a call from the Police Command about the abandonment of a baby in a pigsty around Zebilla market square, so he rushed to the Police station and saw the baby covered with cloth.

According to Hudson Peter Awudi, his office has taken the necessary steps to take care of the health needs of the baby while looking forward to the Police commencing investigations to arrest the mother or perpetrator.

Hudson Peter Awudi advised mothers with similar cases to rather report themselves to the social welfare or orphanage homes if they had difficulty taking care of their children.

The baby has since been hospitalised at the Zebilla Government Hospital while investigations commence.
