A Communications Team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Tema Central Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Richard Anning, has urged President John Dramani Mahama’s government to create a special account to fund free education rather than requiring parents to contribute financially.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem show, hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Richard Anning emphasized the need for the government to establish a sustainable way of financing free education.
“The free education initiative must be sustained by the government. If there are plans for parents to contribute financially, then a special account should be created to allow individuals, parents, philanthropists, and companies to support the initiative,” he stated.
“All Ghanaian children must have access to education, and it must remain free, as initiated by former President Akufo-Addo,” he added.
His comments follow recommendations made by stakeholders at the Greater Accra and Eastern Regional Zonal Sessions of the National Education Forum (NEF), who suggested alternative sources of funding for education instead of relying solely on government resources.
The stakeholders proposed that government funding should be directed primarily toward tuition, salaries, and infrastructure development, while parents should bear the cost of school uniforms, feeding, examination fees, and other essentials.
Richard Anning, however, believes that the government should establish a special account for all public schools, enabling individuals and organizations willing to support free education to contribute financially.
