Gold for Oil policy is a scam – Transport Operators

40,000 metric tonnes of fuel under Ghana’s gold for oil deal arrive
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

We have monitored keenly state of affairs regarding the petroleum sector and have come to a firm conclusion that government has not been forthright with its handling of the sector.

It is a widely known fact that the Nana Addo and Bawumia led government informed the whole country about its intention to roll out the Gold for Oil policy which was expected to stabilized and bring down the price of petrol.

But, disappointingly the price of petrol rather keeps increasing placing us in doubt whether that policy is actually functioning.

While, we do not want to believe that the policy is one of those tactics used by this government to divert state resources into the pockets of individuals like it happened with the PDS and others, we also have reasonable grounds to suspect that government may not be truthful with us.

It is extremely worrying about how the price of fuel keeps increasing at an alarming rate even after the introduction of the policy.

We are by this demanding for the government to constitute an independent body that would include experts such as COPEC and others to scrutinize the deal and establish whether we are being shortchanged or otherwise.

The amount of gold exchanged for oil from day one of rolling out the policy until now should be properly accounted for.

The gains and losses must all also be made public for us to decipher whether it makes economic sense to continue with the policy or otherwise.

Without mincing words, it is of public knowledge ghat this current administration has shown arbitrary cruelty to drivers after luring us to campaign and vote for them in the 2016 elections.

While making these demands, we’d want to draw the attention of all Ghanaians that our neighboring countries like Togo and Ivory Coast even without any such policy have been able to stabilize the price of petrol.

Currently, not only are we grappling with high cost of petrol but we are also struggling to even acquire and own vehicles on hire purchase which is an unlike situation in before Nana Addo and Bawumia took over government.

It is therefore prudent and should be the utmost priority and concern of every Ghanaian to ensure that our resources are protected and judiciously used by duty bearers and to also block any attempt to dissipate those same resources through shady deals.
