KNUST student dies after jumping from high springboard into campus pool

A third-year Chemical Engineering student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), David Osei Agyapong, has died after drowning in the university’s swimming pool on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

The incident reportedly occurred around 5 p.m. when Agyapong went swimming with some friends at the university’s campus pool.

Reports indicate that he climbed a springboard approximately 17.6 feet high before jumping into the deep end of the pool, which is estimated to be about 17.9 feet deep.

A video of the incident, which has since circulated on social media, shows the student climbing the platform and diving into the water.

However, he reportedly failed to resurface moments after entering the pool, prompting other swimmers, bystanders and pool attendants to pull him out.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered at the scene before he was rushed to the KNUST University Hospital for emergency medical attention.

Efforts to revive him were, however, unsuccessful, resulting in his death.

The incident has sparked reactions on social media, with concerns being raised about swimming pool safety and the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
