The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has inaugurated its Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) for the Tema East and Central Constituencies.
Members of the committee included representatives of all political parties in the Tema East and Central Constituencies, faith based organizations, youth and women’s groups, media and Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Electoral Commission and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs),
As part of their mandate, the IPDC will monitor key violations including the distribution of money, and other gifts to the electorate, declaration of election results by political parties and their members, defacing of posters, biased media reportage, campaign violence, use of provocative and abusive language by political parties and their members, rigging of elections, and abuse of incumbency.
The Tema Metropolitan IPDC, chaired by Reverend Francis Guggisberg Tetteh, with Madam Herty Asare as the Secretary.
In her address to the stakeholders, Mrs. Gifty Badu (NCCE Metro Director), said the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) is one of the strategies the NCE uses to foster peaceful elections and ensure political stability in Ghana.
She added that The IPDC was introduced by the NCCE as a result of tension that arose during the 2008 general elections.
“The IPDC serves as a platform for political parties, stakeholders and citizens to collaborate and deliberate on issues that address electoral concerns, promote tolerance and mitigate potential conflicts in the country. One of the key success stories of the IPDC since its inception is the contribution it has made by eliminating or minimizing electoral violence during our general elections. In order to strengthen and consolidate Ghana’s constitutional democracy, the NCCE is reactivating IPDCs in the two hundred and seventy-five (275) constituencies across the country to ens a peaceful atmosphere for Ghanaians to exercise their franchise on December 07, 2024” she stated
Chairman of the the committee, Reverend Francis Guggisberg Tetteh, also outlined the activities of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee
“ The committee will work hard to ensure peaceful and violent free elections at the regional and district levels. and organize interactive Inter/Party fora aim at defusing tensions that could escalate into violence. Enging stakeholders in resolving inter and intra-party disagreements that can
potentially affect the elections. Organising social events such as sporting activities and street processions involving members of all political parties, faith based groups as part of the strategies to enhance inter-faith tolerance for peaceful elections. Helping to monitor and resolve cases of breach of rules and regulations relating to the conduct of the elections and maintenance of public order” he explained
