National teams playing their home games outside frustrates me more – CAF President

National teams playing their home games outside frustrates me more – CAF President

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has expressed his frustration over some national teams in Africa being forced to play their matches away from home.

He emphasized the importance of every country having at least one stadium that meets CAF’s standards for hosting national team games.

Motsepe urged the affected countries to dedicate one stadium for high-profile matches and ensure proper maintenance to avoid bans from playing at home.

“There’s nothing that frustrates me more than a national team or a football team from a country having to play outside. You can’t build football in any country in Africa if the national team or the football clubs do not play in front of their own fans. That’s why the passion and commitment of President Ruto make me so proud.

“It’s something that I’m very happy about because in every country, the emphasis is on working together to ensure we have at least one stadium that meets FIFA and CAF standards,” he said during a CAF meeting in Kenya on September 16, 2024.

CAF withdrew approval for the Baba Yara Stadium due to issues such as an uneven playing field, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover.

This decision followed the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola on September 5, 2024.

In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the Ghana Football Association to invite CAF officials to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Stadium to determine if they meet the requirements to host Black Stars games.
