The Ejura Divisional Council, led by Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II, has initiated efforts to reclaim the management of the Ejura Market Square from the Ejura-Sekyeredumasi Municipal Assembly.
This move comes in response to concerns about mismanagement, corruption, and revenue leakages under the current administration.
The decision follows a recent fire at the market, which caused significant losses, with goods worth thousands of cedis destroyed. The traditional council believes that taking over the market’s management is crucial to ensuring accurate revenue accounting and improving overall administration.
According to the council, the Municipal Assembly’s management has been inadequate, allowing unscrupulous individuals to exploit the market and siphon government revenue. The Ejura Market Square, being one of the largest trading hubs in the Ashanti Region, is vital for the area’s economic development, making its proper management a priority.
The council plans to petition the Ashanti Regional Minister and the Ministry of Local Government to officially transfer market management to them. During a stakeholders’ meeting on September 6, 2024, Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II assured that all government revenues would be duly remitted as required by law. He emphasized that the takeover aims to sanitize the market and ensure the area receives the necessary funds for development.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Dr. Kingsley Osei, who attended the meeting, expressed willingness to collaborate with the traditional council for the effective management of the market. He noted that the Assembly and the chiefs would work together to ensure the market is properly managed.
This move by the Ejura Traditional Council is seen as a positive step towards enhancing the area’s economic prospects and ensuring transparent and accountable market management. Stakeholders, including traders, residents, and government officials, are expected to closely monitor the development.
