“The Time To Lower Ghana’s Maternal Mortality Rate Is Now” – Dr. Korang

Dr. Isaac Korang, a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has affirmed that the maternal health status of a country is indicative of the general well-being of the populace.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s morning show, Nkɔsoɔ Nsɛm on Tuesday, 21st July, Dr Korang addressed a couple of maternal health issues while emphasizing the need to drive home a more solid national strategy to lower maternal fatalities.

Highlighting risk factors such as hypertension, hemorrhage, abortions and infections as the leading causes of death among pregnant women in Africa, Dr. Korang asserted that, the time had come for Ghana to advance its maternal health practices and lower the fatalities associated with child conception and delivery.

He however emphasized that, hypertension which had gained notoriety in many pregnancy-related mortalities had become a foremost risk factor in maternal health issues as recent studies have revealed.

“Hypertension has overtaken hemorrhage as the major cause of mortality among Ghanaian women these days. Your listeners would be surprised to hear this but its is really serious. Previously many of the fatalities were as a result of bleeding but now interestingly, hypertension has overtaken it”

Dr. Isaac Korang

The articulate medical practitioner urged expectant mothers to apply the best self-care practices from the early prenatal stages.
