Former Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo, has expressed doubts about the ability of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, to effectively combat corruption if elected in the upcoming December 7 general elections.
Mr. Domelevo criticized Dr. Bawumia’s approach as Vice President and flagbearer, stating that he has not demonstrated a genuine commitment to fighting corruption.
He argued that the Vice President has consistently failed to show any dedication to addressing the issue, raising concerns about his trustworthiness in leading the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
During an interview on Accra-based Joy FM on Friday, August 23, 2024, Mr. Domelevo questioned the source of the substantial funds used during the NPP’s presidential primary, alleging that Dr. Bawumia spent an estimated GHS 80 million.
He pointed out that the Vice President’s salary over the past seven years would not amount to GHS 50,000, leading him to ask where the additional money for the campaign came from. Mr. Domelevo suggested that Dr. Bawumia should explain the origins of the funds, perhaps citing the sale of family properties or other sources, to demonstrate his commitment to fighting corruption.
In a related development, the Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Mary Addah, also voiced concerns about the NPP’s stance on the corruption fight.
She noted that the party’s recent manifesto launch provided little insight into their plans to combat corruption, indicating a lack of strong interventions to prove the NPP’s incorruptibility
