Ghana’s National Under 20 Women’s Football Team, the Black Princesses, completed a comeback to score a 2-1 win over Nigeria and win gold at the 2023 African Games.

Ghana is hosting the African Games for the first time and the Black Princesses added to Ghana’s medal tally at the Games by clinching the big win over arch rival Nigeria in front of a packed Cape Coast Stadium.

Nigeria took the lead in the 23rd minute off a howler by Ghana goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku but Ghana equalized through Tracey Twum in the 78th minute and Mukarama Abdulai scored in extra time in what turned out to be the winner.

After largely struggling through the early stages of the competition and even attracting boos from fans, Abdulai stepped for her team in the knockout stages to score in the semifinals against Senegal and the winning goal against Nigeria in the final.

Black Princesses head coach Yussif Basigi bagged his second African Games gold medal after leading Ghana’s Senior Women’s Football Team, the Black Queens, to first place at the 2015 edition.
