A group calling itself Concern Youth of Asemkrom – both residents and in the diaspora in the – Aowin Municipal of the Western North Region are gravely worried about the increased invasion of galamsey activities in River Boin.
Despite the coverage of the police at Jema of the illegal miners in a video, Fourteen of them reporting to the District police Commander in the Enchi and a petrol team of eight in collaboration with local divers deactivating three chains taken one to Jema Police Station, the miners have imported over Twenty changes to River Boin and mining with all contempt and impunity.
Speaking to Ali Morrow the leader of the Youth on Plan B FM’s late afternoon show EBAANOSEN hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Ali said, illegal mining activities have polluted the Boin River and destroyed their cocoa farms.
He said that residents have lamented the attempt of these galamaseyers to mine in the River Ngokoin which will cause them to resort to chet- water for their daily activities a situation they described as a major challenge to residents who are mostly Cocoa Farmers.
According to the group, fourteen (14) galamaseyers who were arrested on-site are still in town doing their illegal business and threatening to kill residents at their farms. It appears to them that they are left to their fate as the station police inspector pays no attention to their complaints.
“Galamsey activities have destroyed all the water bodies in the area”, he added.
The Youth indicated that these illegal miners are currently mining in the Boin River on the authority of chiefs and the only river left is River Ngokoin will soon be polluted so they will resist any attempt to mine in that river.
The Angry Youth called on the Municipal Chief Executive, the Regional Minister, the Regional Police Commander, NGOs, and the IGP to immediately deploy personnel to dismantle and destroy all their galamsey equipment before they carry them to a nearby community.
