We have dropped the volume of spillage for the past six days- VRA

Akosombo Dam Spillage: Many farmlands and crops have been destroyed -NADMO director

Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Engineering and Operations at the Volta River Authority has disclosed its outfit has reduced the Akosombo dam spillage from 183,000 to 150,000 cubic feet per second.

According to him, the VRA is likely to reduce the spillage further if available data proves favorable.

“Per study on the Akosombo dam in the past 5 years, the bearable capacity of the dam is proposed to be 277.5 feet, the minimum best operating level of the dam is 276 feet. Today as we speak the level is around 277.2 feet “, he explained.

Mr. Edward Ekow Obeng Kenzo also noted that the decision to stop spillage lies with data from the Ghana Meteorological Service and other stakeholders.

“If we should stop spillage today, it means that the 150,000 cubic feet per second that we are spilling and the one coming in will pile up to start building up the level in the dam which affect the integrity of the dam”, he further explained.

The VRA embarked on a second-level water spillage from the Akosombo and Kong dam in September which had led to the devastation of about 101 communities and over 25,000 displaced in the Volta region.

Meanwhile, he maintained that their focus is to ensure that there will be no loss of life due to the Akosombo dam spillage.
