An Accra Circuit Court has imposed a fine of GHC9,000 on a driver charged with careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm.
Abdul Razak Sulleyman pleaded guilty on the two charges.
Sulleyman is said to have knocked down a female pedestrian at La Cross Over Traffic Light Intersection in the Greater Accra Region on October 3, 2021.
The pedestrian, Salah Adams, 31, is now deceased.
The court presided over by Mrs Afia Owusua Appiah convicted Sulley on his plea.
It ordered Sulleyman to pay a fine of GHC6,000 on the charge of careless and inconsiderate driving, in default serve two years imprisonment.
On the charge of negligently causing harm, the court ordered the convict to pay a fine of GHC9,000 in default serve three years imprisonment.
The sentences are to run concurrently, the court said.
The court in handing down sentence noted that the accused person did not waste the court’s time and the fact that he was a first-time offender, and he also supported the family in the burial of the victim.
The prosecution led by Chief Inspector Samuel Ahiabor said in October 2021, at about 8:30pm, the accused person was driving a Toyota Camry Saloon with trade license plate number DV 1263 D-21 from Alajo towards La beach Hotel using the Giffard Road.
On reaching a section of the road at La Crossover Traffic Light intersection then in the middle lane, he failed to drive with due care and attention.
The prosecution said in the process the accused person knocked down Salah Adams, who was then crossing the road from the offside to the near side edge.
It said the victim sustained severe injuries and she was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital where she was admitted.
The prosecution said the victim, however, passed away on October 4, 2021.
The court heard that Lieutenant Colonel Dr F.K. Hobenu performed postmortem on the deceased and gave the cause of death as “multiple bony and tissue injuries”.
