The director of Tema West National Commission for Civic Education NCCE Mr. Fidel Bortey has urged the Environmental Protection Agency, Forestry Commission, and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives to sit up and deal with the rate at which our forest is degrading.

Speaking on NYANSAPO FIE the lifestyle, family, and relationship show of Plan B FM hosted by Rev. Michael Asenso on the topic “Green Ghana Day-Restoring Ghana’s Degraded Forest Landscape”, Mr. Bortey stressed that, the activities of illegal mining ‘galamsey’ in the country is worrying and rapid solution must be put in place to curb the menace to prevent our forest from going extinct.

“We have committees and agencies responsible to fight galamsey but it is still going on, why have the EPA, Forestry Commission, and MMDAs sit aloof for the continuous degradation of our forest and lands.”

He also noted that sand winning is also another aspect that authorities need to look at because it’s also a contributor to land degradation.

“Riding a motorbike in my area, you have to get down and push your bike because of excessive sand on the part of the road, but now people have mine the sand on the road so whenever it rains the whole place gets flooded”

“Building on the waterways also contributes to flooding which poses a threat to the environment. The NCCE is doing its best to educate the public on such issues but it’s left to the law enforcement agencies to make the laws work”

He then appealed to the stakeholders to stop begging on behalf of offenders when the law takes its cause and by so doing we can build a better environment to live in.
