A former Director of Transport and Logistics at the Presidency (Jubilee House), Odeneho Nana Oppong, has expressed his willingness to contest in the upcoming NPP presidential primaries slated for November 4, 2023.
Making this disclosure in a media interview, Nana Oppong, who is also the National Chairman for the National Association of Garages, gave the assurance of implementing a free port agenda for the country.
Nana Oppong outlined his vision for transforming Ghana’s trade and economic landscape through the establishment of free ports across the country.
“When given the nod to lead NPP, and subsequently become President of Ghana, I will build free port. The idea involves the creation of special economic zones within a country’s borders, where goods can be imported, stored, manufactured, and re-exported without being subject to the usual customs duties and regulations. These zones would aim at attracting foreign direct investment, stimulate economic growth, and foster international trade,” he explained.
Positive effects
The NPP presidential hopeful believes that implementing a free port policy will have significant positive effects on Ghana’s economy. He assured to create state-of-the-art port facilities in strategic locations throughout the country, which would attract both local and international businesses, leading to job creation and increased revenue.
Touching on the potential benefits of a free port agenda, he said “Ghana has a rich history as a trading nation, and its time we leverage our geographical location and strategic advantages to position ourselves as a regional trade hub.
By establishing free ports, he said, it would attract foreign investment, encourage local businesses to flourish, and stimulate economic growth.
Meanwhile, Oppong’s proposal has garnered support from various stakeholders, including business leaders, economists, and government officials.
Nana Oppong added that he is committed to working closely with relevant government agencies, experts, and international partners to ensure a well-regulated and transparent free port system in Ghana.
Advanced plans
He disclosed plans to engage in extensive consultations with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to develop a comprehensive framework that addresses the potential risks, while maximizing the economic benefits.
Over 6 million people registered with the Garages Association are rooting for his candidature. According to them, they are not happy with how their businesses are moving, saying “our only hope now is Nana Oppong”.
The number of potential flagbearer aspirants in the NPP presidential nomination now stands at 10.
