The Ghana Water Company Limited on Monday April 3, 2023 commenced a massive disconnection exercise in a bid to retrieve accumulated debts from it customers.
This will be the fate of many other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and private enterprises who owe GWCL huge amounts of money, forcing the company to embark on the massive revenue mobilization exercise.
Speaking to the media at the forecourt of the Tema Region of the GWCL, Managing Director in charge of operations and special projects of GWCL Eng. Peter De-Veer, said despite the many arrangements for customers to pay their water bills, many have still defaulted.
He added that customers in Tema alone owe the GWCL to a tune of one hundred and forty million Ghana cedis (Ghc 140,000.00 ) debt.
Mr. De-Veer also said water production has become expensive because of galamsey, sand winning and farming either inside or close to river bodies.
These activities tend to increase the turbidity of the rivers where we extract water for treatment. He reiterated.
“As you can see our task force teams are all ready to go after every customer who owes us. You either clear your arrears or your service is disconnected” he added
Plan B News visited some defaulting companies with the GWCL task force team to Hotel Joecarl , Royale Nick Hotel, Tema International hotel who owe of over Ghc30,000.
Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority Club house in Tema were also in default of about Ghc15,848.00 .
