The Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu says discussions are still ongoing with Cabinet about charges to be imposed on some services rendered by the National Ambulance Service.
According to the sector Minister, the charges will be used to fuel the ambulances, which is often a hurdle for the emergency agency.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the governing board for the service, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, said it is hopeful the proposal will be accepted soon by Cabinet for onward implementation.
“Those in the field are talking about fuel, it’s becoming very topical amongst the ministry, directors and ambulance service people. We charge for services to enable us find money to make sure that we always have fuel, in view of inadequate budgetary allocations for fuel.
“This is something we are still discussing, we haven’t made a decision yet. Last time we went to Cabinet, they asked us to come back and define the type of our services that can attract fees because we said non-emergency services. Cabinet was not comfortable they wanted us to be very specific such that people who need ambulances can afford and call for ambulances,” Minister for Health said.
