Ghanaian highlife musician, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has joined calls to get a better royalty structure in the Ghana music industry.
Speaking to Plan B FM’s Blutut Africa during the funeral rites of the late Ghanaian Highlife legend, AB Crentsil, Ambolley revealed that
veteran artists like him have always been sidelined when it comes to how music royalties should be structured.
He said musicians deserve to enjoy the fruit of their labour and for that matter, royalties due them must be paid accordingly.
The multiple award winning highlife musician went ahead to criticize the royalty regime in the Ghana music industry.
He said he could not understand why artists will work hard for so many years in the music industry and are not getting paid.
He called for reforms in the music royalty structure.
He revealed that, he sometimes receive royalties from abroad and other countries as a result of the massive airplay he gets from his music.
He also added that, Ghana music should go back to it roots and develop highlife music.
He believes that is what will help the music industry to progress and compete strongly with other countries.
Ghana has a royalty collection society – GHAMRO, many artists complain of how the royalty revenue is little or non-existent.
