It was an interesting day at the Ministry of Health today, Tuesday, July 12, 2022 as government representatives met with Organized labor unions.
It has been an interesting few days as labor unions have been agitating for better working conditions. Last week, 4 pre-tertiary unions embarked on strike after they claimed their demands for a 20% of Cost of Living Allowance had been overlooked.
Today, the Minister of Finance, Deputy Employment Minister alongside other government representatives engaged organized labor on the way forward. The Medical Association, Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association, Public Workers Services Union have all served notice of an impending strike.
The first group to storm out of the meeting was NAGRAT under Angel Carbonu. Later GNAT also walked out. According to NAGRAT, the negotiations have turned out to be inconclusively and this caused them to walk out.
According to Angel Carbonu they had to walk out because government wanted them to call off the strike before negotiations will start, something they were not ready to do. He explained that government wasn’t ready to pay the 20% Cola.
He mentioned that their strike still continues. Other unions are still locked in the meeting though some unions seem to be walking out. According to the Deputy Employment Minister, the meeting had to be adjourned because some parties were not ready to call off their strike before negotiations start.
