Local Governance expert Mr Issaka Amoh- Kotei has fired back at Okyehene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin the overlord of Ayem Buakwa that he should be bold and tell president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo that he is managing the country’s local government system, he made this known on plan B Fm’s Nkosuonsem when me kotei was speaking with Ohene Addo on Tuesday, June 21,20222.
He said the Legislation Instrument (LI) used to establish the local government act States that, the district Assembly is the highest political authority and if a certain government decides to centralise all their activities and the government needs to be talked to.
” The NPP government is not entered in decentralisation because they created 4 ministries that performed local government functions and this NPP government has made the government function difficult for authorities to run”. He stressed.
Mr. kotei was reacting to the call from the Okyehene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, who has said that placing every activity in the country into the hands of the central government is outdated and declared that he wants the government to introduce an effective, decentralised system to ensure rapid development.
For instance, the Okyenhene wants the government to hand over the management of education at the local level to local authorities.
According to the chief, education would be better managed by local officials than the central government.
Okyenhene said: “Centrality of government is outdated and we need to decentralise … we should not be afraid to change that which has lost its relevance.”
The Okyenhene added, “First of all, education: people should take charge of their education. They should know what teachers are teaching them, and what curriculum is going on. And how their children establish a relationship with their teachers must start from the local level.
“if the board of education in every locality will be responsible for managing education in this area and I can tell you, it will be much better than what the central government is doing.”
