A seven-year-old girl has died when building blocks fell on her after a downpour in Walewale in the West Mamprusi municipality of the North East Region, according to media reports.

Munira Ibrahim was declared dead at the scene. Her skull was badly damaged leading to her death when the roofing of their building was ripped off, witnesses say.

The rainstorm destroyed properties ripping off roofing sheets including the Walewale Senior High Technical School.

Officials confirmed the little girl’s death to the assemblyman for the Nayirifong electoral area, Mohammed Rabiu Jabaa after reporting the matter to the police, reports Asaase Radio.

Jabaa advised the locals to consider planting more trees to reduce the force of windstorms.

“I am advising people in the electoral area to take caution and let’s plant more trees that will help us to be able to stop or reduce the speed of the wind so that it doesn’t cause havoc than it would have,” the assemblyman said.

The deceased has since been buried.

Parts of Ghana have been hit by torrential rains this month signaling the start of the rainy season. It has affected work, led to heavy vehicular traffic, large swamps of running water on roads, breakdown of vehicles and roads being destroyed, especially in the capital Accra.
