Ex- Ghana U-17 captain Sebastian Barnes has attributed Ghana’s footballing crisis to the falling standards of colts and grassroots football.
According to him, the emergence of Player agents coupled with football academies is killing Ghana football.
In an interview on Plan B FM with Dan K Pobi ‘Okocha’ , the former Hearts of Oak player said the fundamental reason for Ghana’s football demise is at the grassroots level and the lack of investment is affecting football development in Ghana.
“It’s about time we go back to the basics. We need to revive and strengthen colts and grassroots football. There a lot of talents and good players in the hinterlands who are born with football. These are the kind of players we have to focus on and groom them to get the new Asamoah Gyan’s and the Dede Ayew’s” He stated
“We need to do away with football academies. It’s not helping us at all. It’s killing our football”. He added
The former U-17 Star is the Technical Director and European Liaison for Division One League side Young Apostles. Barnes holds a UEFA B coaching certificate.
He has been coaching the U15 side of SC Leverkusen, where he also acts as sports director.
He moved to Germany after captaining the Black Starlets to win the FIFA U17 World Cup in Italy in 1991
Barnes played for Bayer Leverkusen between 1991 to 1997.
