The newly proposed E-levy has been undoubtedly the item in the 2022 budget read by Ken Ofori-Atta that has generated the biggest debate. The 1.75% electronic transactions levy if approved by Parliament will take effect from January 2022. But pending Parliamentary debate and approval or otherwise, Ghanaians have expressed their dislike towards the bill and have called on the lawmaking body to reject it.
Ato Forson, a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, in an interview, expressed the stance of the minority to kick against the bill, likewise, Honorable Okudzeto Ablakwa said on the Good Morning Show on Metro TV that, his constituents will not forgive him if he approved of the budget. These are but a few of the stiff opposition that has met the budget.
Okatakyie Afrifa, one of the lead convenors of the fixthecountry movement, has also added his voice to the many that have chorused their disapproval of the E-levy bill. Speaking on the ‘Obranaa so’ show, today, November 20, the outspoken journalist stated that, they shall make the country ungovernable for His Excellency, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo if the E-levy bill is passed. He stressed that they shall storm Parliament on the day of the debate and approval or otherwise of the bill shall take place.
“.. We shall make this country ungovernable for you if the E-levy bill is passed. We are not afraid of anybody in this country. We shall be in Parliament on the day the bill shall be debated in the house. We shall organize a demonstration to resist it”, he said.
Meanwhile, Okatakyie Afrifa added that the positions of the party are gradually making the Vice-president, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia insignificant. He alleged that the party does not involve the Vice-president in decision-making. This statement follows the proposal of the E-levy bill which is contrary to the view expressed by the Vice-president. According to Dr. Bawumia in an interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi, he maintained that he didn’t believe it was prudent for mobile money transactions to be taxed
