Defamation Suit: Spio Sues Wontumi; Demands $10M As Compensation For Calling Him A Thief

Defamation Suit: Spio Sues Wontumi; Demands $10M As Compensation For Calling Him A Thief

Ekow Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Trade and Industry under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has sued Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for defaming him in the media.

The former NDC minister claims his decision to go to the law court to seek redress is because Chairman Wontumi called him a thief on a live TV show in September 2020.

In a writ which has since gone viral on several social media platforms, it is noted that Chairman Wontumi (1st defendant), called the plaintiff (Ekow Spio-Garbrah), a thief on a political show on a TV owned by him on Thursday, September 10, 2020.

The writ continued that Chairman Wontumi said: “All that Inusah Fuseini is saying is that even him, Inusah Fuseini is a thief. If you mention Spio-Garbrah’s name he is a thief, Sylvester Mensah is a thief, Johsua Alabi is a thief, all their Presidential candidates are thieves so if John Mahama is a thief then let us allow him to continue stealing”.

The writ did not state exactly the subject for discussion during the said TV show which subsequently elicited the supposed comments by Chairman Wontumi.

Portion of the writ noted that the Plaintiff says that the defamatory words were uttered, without caution by the defendant in a malicious manner with the intent to cause damage and injury to the plaintiff’s hard-earned global reputation.

It further noted that the Plaintiff quantifies the value of his global reputation as being in excess of ten million dollars, hence the request for that amount as compensation.

The plaintiff is demanding an amount of $10,000,000.00 (ten million dollars) as general damages equivalent to his global reputational which is captured in paragraph 10 of the Statement of Claim.
