Minority would Oppose Government’s Decision To Buy A New Presidential Jet – Ablakwa

The Minority in Parliament has stated that it will oppose any move by President Akufo-Addos’s administration to purchase a larger presidential jet for Ghana.

Eugene Arhin announced plans for the government to purchase a new presidential jet to provide for presidential visits while speaking to press at the Jubilee House on Monday, September 27, 2021.

According to Eugene Arhin, Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has already started the procurement procedure for the new plane.

However, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, has stated that the proposal will never be supported by the NDC minority when it is brought to the house for approval.

The NDC would not back the Akufo-Addo administration in purchasing a new aircraft. “We are not sure that the existing jet has any flaws,” he stated.

“The President and his ministers have been insufficiently transparent and accountable. The entire industry of leading airplanes is based on an insatiable desire for luxury. We will not promote, participate with, or support anything that serves simply to satisfy the president’s insatiable appetite.” he stressed.

Mr. Ablakwa also stated that he intends to file a new urgent question about President Akufo- Addo’s recent trip to the United States.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has been chastised by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a Member of Parliament from North Tongu, who has accused the President of wasting taxpayers’ money by buying luxury jets for his foreign visits rather than using the current presidential jet.

The Government has indicated that the present presidential jet was not suitable for long-haul flights because it could not accommodate additional passengers and had restricted facilities for a president’s comfort.
