The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (G.P.R.T.U) has kicked against the hiking of road tolls in the wake of revelations by the Roads and Highways Minister that Ghanaians must be ready to pay more if they want better road infrastructure.
The Roads and Highways Ministry says Ghanaians should be ready to pay more in road tolls to aid in the provision of proper road infrastructure in the country.
This charge comes as government begins to explore other means of raising funds to finance the country’s road deficit.
Reacting to this on Plan B FM ‘Nkosuo Nsem’ with Ohene Addo, G.P.R.T.U’s Greater Accra Industrial Relations Officer Abass Ibrahim Moro said they will oppose any attempt by the government to increase road tolls in the country.
“They should come out and tell where the losses are going, the, our union will fight any attempt to increase the tolls. What have they done with the existing road tolls they have already collected?
“In any case drivers, we won’t be very happy within this short time. Because initially when you pay a toll that is for the whole day but now you pay as you use the road,” he said.
The Minority in Parliament had earlier indicated it will oppose any plan by government to increase road tolls again to fund road construction and maintenance.
The Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Governs Kwame Agbodza, said his side was interested in helping the government to raise funds to support the roads sector, but it will only do that if the government removes the cap it has placed on the Road Fund.
