Plans underway for reconstruction of Odawna market

Plans underway for reconstruction of Odawna market
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Work is ongoing in earnest to prepare the Odawna market at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra, to temporarily accommodate traders selling along the pavement.

The Korle Klorttey Municipal Assembly (KOKMA) has begun leveling the market with stone chippings, demarcating areas for both traders and drivers who hitherto operated there until it was razed down by fire in November last year.

The move is part of efforts to decongest the capital city and allow for free flow of human and vehicular traffic under the “Let’s Make Accra Work” again agenda by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr. Henry Quartey.

It is also to allow for drainage and rehabilitation works on the Odaw River to control floods in the city ahead of the main reconstruction of the market. Municipal Chief Executive for KOKMA, Nii Adjei Tawiah during a tour of the market to assess work done so far, expressed satisfaction with contractors on site.

He asked them to expedite work on leveling the market to help realize the government`s agenda to make Accra the cleanest city.

Chairman of the Pedestrian Shopping Mall, Ernest Mensah, commended government for its continuous assistance to traders following the destruction of the market.

He noted that although the incident had affected the livelihood of traders, they are willing to co-operate with the government to get back on their feet.
