“Your Facemask Could Save You”, Virologist Insists

The President of the Ghana Association of Private Medical Laboratories and consultant virologist, Dr. Alexander Martin-Odoom has bemoaned the lackadaisical manner with which some members of the Ghanaian public are handling the nations’s COVID-19 situation.

Speaking with Plan B  FM’s morning show host, Maxwell Ohene Addo, the medical researcher  asserted that the high rate of transmission of the novel virus leaves no room for luxury and admonished Ghanaians to adopt the practice of wearing their face masks as a crucial precautionary measure.

“People don’t seem to be taking the protocols seriously, it’s unfortunate that a lot of people are not wearing their face masks properly”, he lamented.

He further asserted that the COVID-19 protocols were established on scientific facts and if strictly adhered to, Ghana would make steady progress in managing the spread of the virus.

The scientist also sought to educate the public on the efficacy of face masks as compared to face shields.  He emphasized that face shields, even though fashionable and transparent, do not offer adequate protection to its wearer to be worn alone in these COVID-19 times. A Face shield is meant to protect the face against splatter. A properly fitted facemask on the other hand, is the way to go as it covers the nose and mouth, providing better protection against the virus.

“Face shields are not totally safe because the virus is air-borne and could be inhaled even if you wear a face shield, that is why I urge people to keep wearing face masks because they are not easily penetrated and guarantee better safety”, he insisted.
