In a sharply worded sermon that has stirred conversation online, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams has criticised the wives of politicians, accusing some of indirectly sustaining corruption by failing to challenge unexplained wealth in their households.
The Presiding Bishop of Action Chapel International said in a video shared online, that many individuals enter public office with little or no prior work experience, yet suddenly gain access to vast sums of money once in power.
He argued that in such situations, spouses often overlook obvious warning signs and avoid asking difficult questions that could expose wrongdoing.
“Because they push for their party to come to power, even though they don’t have the capacity, they are given positions without merit and they misbehave. And they have wives who will never tell their husbands.
“You have never worked before, you’ve never set up any business, you don’t pay taxes. How come suddenly you come home with a briefcase of money? Where is this money coming from? Where is this brand-new car coming from? Where did you get money to build this new house?” he said.
He went further to suggest that some of these spouses benefit from questionable wealth while still encouraging their partners’ conduct.
“You don’t ask questions. You enjoy it and give him more sex, encouraging him to kill, lie, steal, scheme, destroy, and make money at the expense of poor people. You don’t understand the implications. I’m not cursing anybody but I’m telling you by authority make no mistake,” he told his congregation.
According to Duncan-Williams, such silence amounts to moral complicity, warning that it normalises wrongdoing in public life.
“The evil that men do lives after them. Make no mistake. The law of sowing and reaping does not need your address or telephone number; when it is time for you to reap, it will find you,” he warned.
He added that those who exploit national resources will eventually face consequences, stressing that public office is often abused under the guise of political reward.
“As long as you belong to a party, when your party comes into office, you are given a position to share the national cake. You take what you please at the expense of the suffering citizens. And you think you are going free? No…you will end up with some evil disease.
“We live in a society that is passive and cowardly. You see what is wrong and nobody talks,” Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams further stated.
