Social media platforms have been set ablaze after the traditional leader of the Ashanti Kingdom made this clear to the ministry of land and resources, Hon Samuel Abu Jinapor over the new land act.
Indeed, it’s true that all leaders in a democratic state must be accountable to their subjects but this time, it’s seems the laws of the land is being overturned. The ministry of land not long ago presented the New Land Act to the traditional council of the Ashanti Kingdom as they demanded. The minister explaining made it clear that this new act will make all caretakers of lands (chiefs) accountable to their subjects. He further added that subjects can also send their chief to court and demand an accountability on how they are taking care of the their land because it’s their right.
The Asantehene responsible to the minister noted that what have been stated in the Act will not be possible because the government cannot interference on how he manage his Kingdom. According to the king of Asanteman, all lands under his jurisdiction are protected by his sub-chiefs and priest and all of them accounts to his office. He added that the youth cannot seek for an accountability from chiefs concerning how lands are managed.
Social media users after reading and hearing what the chief said have asked him many questions. Some have asked why he is telling Ghanaians to accept that e-levy which they don’t like but rejecting an act which make him accountable to Asanteman. Some too have stated that the king cannot reject the bill because they don’t see what he has been using revenues generated from lands for.
