When pain turns to revenge: Rev. Benjamin Boateng speaks

Revenge brings more problems than relief — Rev. Benjamin Boateng
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Reverend Benjamin Boateng has cautioned against allowing emotional pain, unresolved conflicts, and perceived injustices to develop into a desire for revenge.

According to him, revenge can take root in homes, schools, churches, and communities when conflicts are not properly addressed and resentment is allowed to build over time.

Speaking on Nyansapo Fie on Plan B FM, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Rev. Boateng identified favouritism, betrayal of trust, rivalry, family disputes, and financial or property disagreements as some of the factors that can create deep resentment and eventually lead people to seek revenge.

He explained that within families, long-standing emotional pain and perceived unfair treatment can create bitterness among relatives. He also mentioned intense rivalry that may have developed over several years or even decades, childhood experiences, parental dynamics, and disputes over finances or property as potential sources of conflict.

Rev. Boateng further noted that betrayal of trust and the exposure of personal secrets among siblings can deepen resentment and create a desire to retaliate.

He said similar situations can occur in schools, where favouritism and rivalry among individuals or groups may generate resentment and lead to conflicts.

The Reverend stressed that forgiveness is an important way of preventing revenge, explaining that when people genuinely forgive one another, revenge loses the opportunity to grow.

He therefore urged people who have been hurt or offended to choose forgiveness rather than retaliation, stressing the need to address conflicts peacefully.

Rev. Boateng also advised people who have received forgiveness for their wrongdoing not to repeat the same offence.

He said repeating an offence after being forgiven could make the act appear deliberate and potentially reopen old wounds.

He encouraged individuals to learn from their mistakes and promote forgiveness and reconciliation in their homes, schools, churches, and communities.
